My dog ate my homework. Aliens abducted me. Someone stole my shirt. I didn’t know. Pick any one of those and they’ll be just as valid an excuse as my reasons for not working on the house this past 6 months. It started with some delays in me trying to figure out things (plumbing, flooring, siding, etc). Then it was money (which is still an issue). Then it was me trying to spend more time with my family. Then it was me going after a promotion at work. Then it was me getting the promotion and dealing with all the extra workload. Then all of a sudden its winter and the days are shorter. Then I got a new PS4 and oh boy, the time gets sucked away 😉
If I’m being honest with myself though, building a house on your own with limited funding and time is a lot like trying to lose weight. At first you are rocking it. You are the MAN then you hit a snag and take a hot minute to bounce back. Then you hit a few snags and you find yourself indulging at Taco Bell and giving yourself the excuse that its OK cause you just worked out the week before… I fell off the wagon, hard.
So today I decided that I was going to get back at it. My friend Weyman who is a handy man of all sorts has told me all along to just keep going, don’t stop, research a bit, but when in doubt just do it. If it gets messed up you learned a valuable lesson but you didn’t stop. I get in the frame of mind all the time that I have to make this house perfect. I am now telling myself that this isn’t going to happen. I’m not a carpenter. I’m not a plumber. I’m not an electrician. I’ll do the best I can and be OK with the results. I’ll hire out for things that are dangerous or far too complex. I’ll just keep trudging along. This shit is happening!
Next post…getting the siding prep started.
